TVTRobin Leach and Robin Williams.

The lists that are compiled as newspapers, magazines and TV shows look back at the year made me reflect on the sad losses of 2014. We lost many greats, but nobody funnier than comedian and movie superstar Robin Williams.
I remember my very first “Entertainment Tonight” interview with him in 1982, but I had forgotten his impression of me at the 58th Academy Awards in March 1986.
He will be missed always as one of the most innovative comedy stars of all time.
UPPING THE ANTE: Hotel mogul Steve Wynn has responded to financial critics who fear the northeast is becoming oversaturated because of new casino licenses granted in Massachusetts and upstate New York.
MGM Resorts will break ground in Springfield, Mass., this spring, and three casinos will start construction in 2015. Wall Street analysts fear the Northeast will face oversaturation like Atlantic City.
But Steve is increasing the cost of his Everett, Mass., venue to $1.75 billion, adding more hotel rooms than envisioned. He also replaced the early design to one resembling his Wynn and Encore here on the Strip complete with a showroom.
GOODBYE, ‘PANDA!,’ HELLO, SINATRA: “Cake Boss” star and baker extraordinaire Buddy Valastro had his Palazzo dessert team at Carlo’s Bakery serve the farewell cake when the cast of “Panda!” played its last performance Sunday.
The theater now gets ready to welcome revered singing-impressionist Bob Anderson and his “Frank Sinatra: The Man, The Music” tribute show set for its first performance Jan 24. Vincent Falcone will be the music director of a 32-piece orchestra. For 10 years, he was Sinatra’s musical director in addition to stints with everybody from Tony Bennett, Andy Williams, Robert Goulet and Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme.
It will take two hours every night for Oscar-nominated Kazu Tsuji or his assistant to make his magic makeup work to transform Bob to uncannily look like Ol’ Blue Eyes himself. The “Panda!” showroom started being transformed into an old nightclub vibe as of Monday.
NEW SHOWS: Showman Jeff Beacher will add two productions to his Beacher’s Madhouse at MGM for 2015. Watch for the January announcements of a 7:30 p.m. variety show and a 9 p.m. burlesque show.
Jeff will juggle a TV show with Pitbull, Enrique Iglesias and Jason Derulo at his new Thompson Miami Beach hotel venue New Year’s Eve, then throw his black-tie party here at the MGM Grand showroom with celebrity friends. His festivities start tonight with 100 sexy L.A. models.
NEW RESTAURANT: Following the success of Urban Turban Bombay Kitchen and Tapas Bar in New Zealand, Indian restaurateurs Bhushan Arolkar and chef Vijay Deokar have opened a branch at 3900 Paradise Road.
The rickshaw mascot was imported from India, and guests can take selfies with it. There are classic Indian favorites including Chicken Tikha Masala and also bottomless curries with unlimited refills of Himalayan Chicken and Bombay Lamb Masala. Sharing platters including gunpowder shrimp.
100TH SHOW: The Downtown Podcast will film its 100th episode on New Year’s Day at the Ogden with Harrah’s comedy juggler headliner Jeff Civillico. The Rockie Brown Band will provide musical backing. Check out the podcasts at DowntownPodcast.tv.
NEW YEAR IN FOOD: Let’s look at possible 2015 changes in food. The introduction of lesser-known fish species will become a hip addition to more menus, according to chef Rick Moonen of Mandalay Bay’s Rx Boiler Room and RM Seafood. The demand for sustainable seafood remains as strong as ever, prompting restaurants to explore responsibly sourced options and alternatives to American menu staples. “As chefs are exposed to the amazing variety of seafood that is available, they will start to go nuts!” Rick predicts.
Diners can expect more nontraditional fish to crop up on menus following the lead of current offerings such as Salt Water Barramundi at Sage in Aria and sea-to-table options like “Rick’s Sustainable Catch of the Day” at RM Seafood.
A flavor profile traditionally associated with mixology, bitter elements will make big moves in the kitchen next year. According to Joshua Smith, executive chef of soon-to-open Bardot Brasserie at Aria, unique ingredients will rise to prominence as chefs incorporate bitter flavors for balance in cooking. Since bitter is a crucial component of traditional French cooking, Joshua emphasizes it on the menu of this new restaurant opening January using ingredients such as vermouth, endives, escarole and frisee.
Rick and Joshua expect to see alcohol influence food dishes in unexpected ways, driving new approaches to the concept of booze-infused food. “Ingredients used to make beer and cocktails will start to appear in food preparations,” says Rick, citing examples such as malted barley added as a crunch in salads, dried spelt grains used for crusts, and juniper berry sauces served with game meat.
Joshua adds that he will be using high-end wines including La Vieille Ferme Rouge and Blanc during cooking to elevate recipes and incorporate unique alcohols into dishes, such as Blue Crab Crepe with Normandy cider beurre blanc.

EncoreEncore is nearly a mirror image of the Wynn Las Vegas, from the brown glass exterior to the style and placement of the logo — and it's just as luxurious as the original. Some call Encore the younger, hipper sister of Wynn.
Located steps from Wynn Las Vegas, yet under the same roof, Encore's fanciful and intimate atmosphere is unlike anything anywhere, with an environment that is uniquely Wynn and distinctly Encore.
Steve Wynn spared no detail in his newest property when designing Encore. The casino floor is decorated in rich reds, browns and purples with mosaic butterflies embedded into the marble floors and fresh flowers greeting guests in the casino atrium.
Luxury doesn't end of the casino floor. Encore boasts 2,034 impeccable guest rooms and suites. The standard suites resort accommodations are 700 square feet with the larger suites measuring in at 5,800 square feet. Standard suites guest rooms feature plasma screen TVs, high-end bath products, spectacular views of the Strip, and also plush linens and mattresses, which can be purchased in the Encore store, in case you can't get enough.
Dining options include Chef Theo Schoenegger's fine Italian cuisine at Chef Theo Schoenegger's, Sinatra's and the pan-Asian café creations of Chef Jet Tila at Wazuzu.
Guests can also dine on steaks and chops at star Botero Steak. At Switch, Encore's French restaurant, the walls come to life mid-meal and your surroundings appear to change before your eyes. For decadent, hip Asian dining before or after a night at one of resort’s ultra-chic nightclubs, visit Andrea’s, the newest dining experience at Encore.
XS headlines Encore's nightlife and pool party scene while Danny Gans takes care of humor and entertainment. Encore also features two of the most celebrated nightlife experiences in Vegas, XS Nightclub and Surrender. Both feature main room dance floors that flow outside to pools, patio spaces and gaming areas.
When the temperature rises, don’t miss Encore Beach Club, the premier daylife destination that features three tiered pools and luxurious cabanas and bungalows with private infinity pools.
Encore Esplanade features 11 high-end retail stores, with brands like Hermes, Chanel, Loro Piana and Rock, and Republic Piaget luxury watches. The resort also has a Forbes Five-Star spa, a salon and an 18-hole, on-site golf course, which is adjacent to the Wynn.
