We get story ideas, tips and gossip rumblings in phone calls and emails, and some you simply can’t ignore.
It could be a comedienne’s joke, or it could be the truth.
Whatever it is, rumors have started that pop princess and Planet Hollywood headliner Britney Spears on Sunday was presented with a “huge engagement ring” by new beau Charlie Ebersol in a proposal described as “sweet” by witnesses who allegedly included Aerosmith rocker and frontman Steven Tyler.
Somebody tried to take a photograph, but it was blocked on the grounds that “it’s a very personal moment.” No word of confirmation or denial yet out of Britney’s camp.
FIRST ON THE WEST COAST: This morning when the eagerly awaited burger, hot dog and frozen custard chain Shake Shack opened at New York-New York, the Manhattan company filed for a $100 million Wall Street IPO for further expansion.
Restaurateur Danny Meyer has opened 61 locations since its first in 2004 in Manhattan’s Madison Square Park. He describes it as a “modern-day roadside burger stand” with crinkle-cut fries and fresh-made frozen custard. It has a cult-like following around the world.
New York-New York President Cynthia Kiser Murphy summed it up best: “Their arrival is yet another extraordinary moment for our resort.”
Execs expect it to best the Big Apple flagship, which pulls in $7.5 million in annual sales, especially when the new MGM-AEG Arena opens at New York-New York in early 2016. The housewarming opening at Shake Shack is set with Rusty Maples and Andre Agassi’s College Preparatory Academy Drum Line on Jan. 13.
NEW ROCKER: Rock singer Mark Boals is joining the permanent lineup of “Raiding the Rock Vault” at Tropicana. The powerhouse vocalist and bass player, best known for his work with Dokken and Ted Nugent, takes the stage Friday and Wednesday at 9 p.m.
“Mark has performed as a guest in the show several times, and we’re excited to welcome him on board as a permanent member of the lineup,” said producer Sir Harry Cowell. “He’s an incredible musician, a talented singer and an excellent addition to the show.”
He joins the all-star cast of Howard Leese (Heart), Hugh McDonald (Bon Jovi), Doug Aldrich (Whitesnake), Robin McAuley (Survivor), Paul Shortino (Quiet Riot), Jay Schellen (Asia), Andrew Freeman (Lynch Mob), Michael T. Ross (Hardline) and female vocalists Carol-Lyn Liddle (Masters of Rock) and Stephanie Calvert (Starship).
The hit show brings the history of rock and roll to life featuring classic anthems by the biggest acts in music including The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, Queen, U2, Aerosmith, Van Halen, AC/DC, Pat Benatar, Foreigner, Heart, Journey, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake, Supertramp and many more.
JERRY RETURNS: Right on the heels of his two-day weekend performances, comedy king Jerry Seinfeld will return to the Colosseum at Caesars Palace for two nights on April 17 and 18.
Tickets go on sale Friday, but Total Rewards members get access to an exclusive presale as of Tuesday morning at 10.
‘HARDCORE PAWN’: Seth Gold from reality-TV phenomenon “Hardcore Pawn,” TruTV’s No. 1-rated show, just booked his flights and hotel to attend the CES convention here next week. The show starts another new season tonight.
“Hardcore Pawn” proves that there’s never a dull moment at the American Jewelry & Loan store in Detroit. Seth is coming to CES to connect new brands for his stores, both brick-and-mortar as well as online. With his interest in technology, he likes to stay on top of the latest in consumer electronics. As an authorized reseller of Monster products, he will attend its party next Wednesday.
HANGOVER CURES: It’s that time of the year and the season for over-indulging in drinks. As New Year’s Eve and the wildest party of the year nears, I was asked to create a short video for the Hooplaha network of the Top Five Las Vegas hangover cures.
It’s no secret that Las Vegas is the ultimate party paradise, so this video, which includes the places to feed your hangover and rejuvenate your energy, comes just in time to ring in 2015!
OLIVIA’S TRAIN RIDE: Opportunity Village’s Magical Forest will honor law enforcement officers for their service and dedication to the Las Vegas community now through Sunday. When the brave Men and Women in Blue show their badge, they receive four complimentary general-admission tickets.
Flamingo headliner Olivia Newton-John, who is here for New Year’s Eve shows, is at the Magical Forest tonight on her day off. She wanted to ride the miniature Forest Express train there through the decorated Christmas tree walkways.
ROOM-RATE FORECAST: Looking ahead to the first quarter of 2015, it appears that Las Vegas weekday and weekend hotel-room rates will level out with a 4 percent increase over last year, although top-end luxury hotels will probably see a 15 percent increase. The first quarter, though, will face a tough year-over-year comparison, since the CONEXPO-CON/AGG convention that took place here with 150,000 conventioneers last March won’t be back in 2015.
STAR SURVEILLANCE
Reality-TV stars Lisa Vanderpump, her husband Ken Todd, their daughter and son-in-law Pandora Vanderpump-Sabo and Jason Sabo and friends were at the new SLS Las Vegas. Bravo’s “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” and “Vanderpump Rules” entourage began Sunday night at star chef Jose Andres’ Bazaar Meat and continued on to the Sayers Club and before winding up in Life for DJ Erick Morillo.
Las Vegas native actor Thomas Dekker was at Lavo in Palazzo on Sunday night to celebrate his 27th birthday. Thomas (“Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles,” “Heroes, “The Secret Circle”) enjoyed eggplant Parmesan, rice balls and penne vodka.
Veteran comedian Shecky Green joined Marty Allen, Lou Toomin and Nelson Sardelli at Bagel Cafe for brunch Sunday. They swapped Old Vegas stories before driving down to the Fountains at Caesars Palace to recall the time Shecky wound up in the water after losing control of his car racing down the Strip!
