On Sunday the IndyCar Series ran the Shell-Pennzoil Grand Prix of Houston 2 - the second of two races over the weekend on a 1.683-mile, 10-turn temporary street course in Reliant Park.
In the final lap, contact between Dario Franchitti and Takuma Sato sent Franchitti's car launching over Sato's and into the fence. Parts and pieces from both vehicles flew into the grandstand. E.J. Viso then hit Sato's car as Franchitti landed.
The accident showered debris into the grandstand, injuring 13 fans and an IndyCar Series official.
Dr Michael Olinger, IndyCar's director of medical services, later gave an update saying: "Franchitti was admitted awake and alert to Memorial Hermann Texas Medical Center in Houston for a concussion, spinal fracture that will require no surgery and a fracture to the right ankle. He will be kept overnight."
Houston Fire Department spokesman Ruy Lozano said 13 fans were injured by the flying debris, and that 11 were treated on site at Reliant Park. Lozano said two were taken to the hospital for treatment.
