McIntyre unhappy after cup defeat

McIntyre felt Michael O'Halloran's sixth-minute effort should not have counted, claiming that Saints defender Steven Anderson had been in an offside position when the goal was scored.

However, referee John Beaton overruled his assistant and waved away the appeals before Saints extended their lead thanks to a stunning strike by James McFadden five minutes later.

McIntyre said: "The first goal, I don't know why it was given. The linesman has definitely flagged that it's not a goal but the referee has overruled him because he said their player hadn't touched it.

"But, for my mind, Anderson has tried to flick the ball, he's missed it and it's gone in the net. That put our goalkeeper off.

"I think we're all scratching our heads, managers and coaches alike, at this rule. For me, it's definitely interfered with my goalkeeper diving. It's a real sore one to take."

As for the match itself, McIntyre added: "It's deja vu from last week. We spoke about squeezing the game and not allowing James McFadden any space but we certainly didn’t do that for the second goal.

“That was really disappointing because it was something we had spoken about."

Meanwhile, St Johnstone boss Tommy Wright was thrilled to see his team reach the fifth round of a competition they won last season.

He said: "It was a great start, we were on the front foot and we had talked about how important that was.

"The goal comes from a great run from Michael, he got a free-kick and then he's instinctive and that was a good finish from him.

"And Faddy's goal was sublime, it was just an unbelievable strike and I don't think the keeper even moved for it.

"I've been asked if other teams will see us as a scalp being the cup holders, and maybe they do, but maybe their standards have dropped if St Johnstone are a scalp for them.

"We're the cup holders and in cup football you just beat what's in front of you. Maybe we have grown a wee bit in stature and I know we're the holders but we don't feel that puts us under any more pressure.

"Let's be honest, we've only won it once in 130 years, it's not as if we're winning it year-in, year-out. But it would be nice to get another home draw and see what we can do."
