A major announcement in Bixby on Wednesday has some people with Internet speeds faster than anywhere in the country.
FOX23’s Preston Jones talked with the Bixby mayor about how supersonic internet will help bring growth to Bixby.
Bixby is Oklahoma’s first city to have high speed gigabit internet service. That means if a user is trying to download a movie online, what used to take about an hour to download a two-hour HD movie can now take less than a minute.
“I'm going to sign up for the big one, I want to download movies fast,” said Bixby Mayor John Easton.
BTC Broadband, headquartered in Bixby, calls it the Big Gig. Company president Scott Floyd said a family of four can download and upload using their phones, computers, tablets and gaming consoles all at the same time without delay
“They get to take advantage of the best Internet that is possible from anywhere in the United States,” said Floyd.
But it's for more than just entertainment
“It will certainly help the school system. It will be a feather in their hat,” said Easton.
The company said it'll also help boost business.
“Almost any business, even manufacturing or low tech, those companies need the ability to have high speed communications," said Floyd.
The company didn't ask for any incentives to come for the project. And with so much growth and the city busting at the seams Easton said it’s put Bixby on a level with Dallas and Kansas City.
“It makes us very proud, puts us on the map, sure does,” said Easton.
Starting Wednesday 4,600 homes in Bixby have access to that internet as Bixby continues to grow, BTC promises to up that number to 6,000.
