The Tulsa Police Department released new details in a homicide investigation in midtown Tulsa.
TPD officers confirmed around 5 a.m. Tuesday, they made an arrest in this case. After several hours of questioning 29-year-old Joel Giefer was arrested on one count of first degree murder.
Officers tell us the victim was possible beaten to death by a baseball bat.
Tulsa police told FOX23 they were called just after 12:00 a.m. Tuesday, to check on the wellbeing of a roommate at a house near 4th and Yale Avenue. Police
say when they arrived they spoke with Giefer, who said he is the roommate to the deceased man.
TPD said Giefer's demeanor was odd and his answers to where his roommate might be were inconsistent.
Police wrote in Giefer's arrest report that during their conversation, Giefer made statements about his roommate saying, "He was just trying to get him into the truck," and, "he hit me first."
At Giefer's home officers noticed a baseball bat propped up against the wall near an open bedroom door.
They also spotted what they believe was a pool of blood near the bedroom door.
Police say Giefer positioned himself in front of the opened door, in attempt to block officers' view.
Officers secured Giefer and went into the bedroom where they found a male lying underneath a mattress in a pool of blood.
Police say the deceased man had injuries consistent with blunt force trauma.
Officers said because of the amount of blood the victim was pronounced dead at 12:37 a.m., Tuesday morning.
Police say this is a “gruesome” and “violent” scene.
TPD arrested Giefer and transported him to the Detective Division.
Detectives said during the interview Giefer made statements to the fact that he was, "thinking of killing and disposing of his body."
At this time, Tulsa police have not released a motive for the murder. However, in Giefer's arrest report officers stated that an unidentified person told police there had been an issue over rent money recently.
Investigators say they made contact with the original caller but have not released information.
Officers said Giefer recently moved in with the deceased male from out of state. Police say they believe the person who died was renting the home but let Giefer move in with him.
The deceased male’s identity will not be released until his family is notified.
This is Tulsa’s 51st homicide of 2014.
